Ken Bacchus

The Art of Photography

By Danielle Torry

In the art of photography, the image is never just what’s in front of the lens, it’s what the artist chooses to reveal. For Ken Bacchus, a fashion photographer and creative director based in Saint Augustine, Florida, photography is a bold editorial language: storytelling layered with cultural and societal depth, shaped through intentional juxtaposition.

Ken’s eye was formed long before fashion sets and studio lights. Born in Barbados and raised in Guyana, his early environment deeply influenced how he sees identity, culture, and visual narrative today. He’s been a photographer for eight years, but his path began in a quieter place: nature and macro photography. He photographed small plants and insects, convinced he would one day reach the standards of the great photographers regularly featured by National Geographic.

In his third year of shooting, a move within Guyana interrupted his creative rhythm and led to an artist block. There were months where he didn’t shoot at all. Then he was introduced to a designer and given the opportunity to photograph their work. That collaboration sparked everything: his passion returned, and fashion became the new frontier. Today, Ken has spent the last 4–5 years focused on fashion photography and has also become a stylist. He describes an adrenaline rush that comes from watching people step into a concept, from getting dressed, finally glamorous, and feeling fully seen. That transformation is central to his work, fashion as story not just what’s on the surface.

Two of Ken’s current projects (still unnamed) revolve around a signature idea: fashion in strange places, and strange places that are fashionable. He often places fashion in environments where it wouldn’t ordinarily exist, creating images that feel unique, deliberate, and emotionally charged. Ironically, many of his shoots begin with music. Sound helps him visualize the start of a project, then he curates references across artists and industries, building a concept from mood to wardrobe. With the trust of a strong model or subject, the idea becomes real.

Ken is honest about the inner challenge of creating, the feeling of inadequacy and the question of belonging. But he uses it as fuel and the proof he cares enough to keep raising his own standard, because art is always evolving. Above all, Ken credits community and collaboration. When Ken moved to St. Augustine, his first thought was, “Where are the artists? I need to find my new community.” He’s a firm believer that people need people—and that connection has become both his greatest support and the purpose behind his work: building community, strengthening bonds, and creating opportunities to give back. Today, as the photographer for the Loving Our Town brand, Ken is in demand and being booked throughout the city.
