Greg White

By Courtney Olson

Greg White has dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for the underserved communities in Saint Augustine, Florida. His tireless efforts have led to the creation of transformative infrastructure projects that address critical issues such as healthcare, mental health, youth development, and cultural preservation. Through his leadership and vision, White has become a cornerstone of progress in Saint Augustine’s historic Black community.

Beside the creation of the Solomon Calhoun Community Center, one of White’s most significant contributions is the establishment of the West Augustine Historical Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization founded with the goal to enhance the quality of life for the residents of West Augustine, by focusing on social, environmental, and economic disparities.

Currently, White is spearheading the development of a 14,000-square-foot Health and Wellness Center located at Brevard Street and King Street. This center is a direct response to the alarming health disparities in the historic West Augustine area, where infant mortality rates are four times higher than the county average, and rates of HIV, kidney failure, cancer, and other illnesses are disproportionately high.

To address these challenges, White has partnered with UF Health to provide medical services aimed at reducing infant mortality and improving overall health outcomes. Recognizing the stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse in underserved areas, he has also collaborated with Epic Behavioral Healthcare to offer support for mental health and addiction recovery. Additionally, White has joined forces with the YMCA to promote physical fitness and wellness, ensuring that community members have access to resources that encourage healthy lifestyles.

White’s vision extends beyond healthcare. He has partnered with the Wildflower Clinic to provide services for uninsured residents and with the Youth Crisis Center to support at-risk youth and prevent them from entering the judicial system. These partnerships reflect his holistic approach to community development, addressing not only physical health but also mental well-being and social stability.

One of Greg White’s key focuses with this project is to provide after-school programs in the area. White is of the firm belief that “no eight-year-old should have to look after a three-year-old” so that their mother can provide for them. After-school programs serve as an excellent outlet for children to extend their learning, freeing them and their parents from the fear and stress of being independent before they are equipped to be.

Another monumental project under White’s leadership is the development of an Historic Black History Museum in Saint Augustine. This museum marks the integral influence of Saint Augustine as an epicenter for civil progress in the region. Florida Memorial University, a Historically Black College, which left the area during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, is partnering with the museum to contribute to this historic initiative. The museum will serve as a cultural hub, preserving the rich history of the Black community in Saint Augustine and celebrating its resilience and contributions.

White’s involvement in the museum project is deeply personal. He recalls his own experiences during the Civil Rights Movement, including his experience as a Freedom Rider, on his way to Tallahassee. The harrowing tale of justice overcoming hate, even as their bus burned in an attack, serves as a reminder of the centuries-long fight African Americans have fought to procure true freedom.

By implementing infrastructure in underserved communities; providing clean water, paved roads, access to the internet, and more, actors like White help to ensure that people have the tools they need to contribute to a prosperous community.

Through his work, Greg White has become a beacon of hope and progress for Saint Augustine’s Black community. His dedication to creating positive infrastructure and fostering partnerships has not only addressed pressing issues but has also laid the foundation for a brighter future. As White continues to lead transformative projects, his legacy as a community builder and advocate for equity will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.
