Don Cooper

The Art of Songwriting

By Danielle Torry

Don Cooper is a St. Augustine singer and songwriter whose creative life has been shaped by decades of steady, hands-on devotion to craft. He began writing and playing songs in middle school, performed through high school and college, and started his professional career in his early twenties. Since then, he has continued creating as a lifelong musician, performer, writer, and teaching artist, with experience across many forms of production and media.

In Don’s songwriting, you can hear a deep respect for the world as it is right now. He describes his work as a response to the current moment, but with the humility of someone who recognizes how much of the human experience is shared. Over time, that perspective has influenced how he writes, steering him toward story-driven lyrics and third-person narratives rather than personal declarations. As life has brought more real encounters with loss, themes of mortality and meaning have naturally become more present in his work.

After relocating to the South, Don found himself reconnecting with the acoustic folk, country, and bluegrass roots of his Midwestern youth. St. Augustine’s musical culture encouraged him to revisit traditional repertoire he once set aside, while still continuing to write original music that feels grounded, thoughtful, and honest.

Don’s process is disciplined. He does not wait for inspiration to arrive. He shows up, gets to work, and listens for what comes through, shaping ideas through repetition, rewriting, harmonic structure, and rehearsal. Like many creatives, he also wrestles with perfectionism and self-doubt, and he has learned to keep those voices from interrupting the first spark. For Don, creating is not just what he does. It is how he processes life, how he finds calm, and how he stays connected to meaning.

One of Don’s most recent songs carries special significance for our community. He dedicated it to beloved local French chef, Chef Alex G, and wrote it as a tribute to him shortly before he passed. It is a reminder that creativity lives in many forms, and that honoring someone’s artistry can take the shape of a melody, a memory, and a song offered with love. At the heart of Don’s work is a simple truth about community: we are better when we gather, and the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
