The Art of Theatre

By Danielle Torry

Theatre does not happen alone. It is one of the most collaborative art forms, built through shared vision, trust, and many hands working toward the same moment onstage. In St. Augustine, that collaboration comes to life through A Classic Theatre, guided by Artistic Director Cindy Alexander and a dedicated team of actors, directors, set builders, designers, marketers, and volunteers.

Cindy’s path to St. Augustine theatre was shaped by a wide and hands-on career. After earning her theatre degree at Florida State University, she moved to New York to pursue professional theatre and became a talent agent representing actors in theatre, film, and television. Over fifteen years, she was immersed in the world of performance, attending shows constantly, scouting talent, and supporting her clients while developing a deep knowledge of storytelling, casting, and what makes a production truly work. She later moved into theatre management at a 1,000-seat performing arts center, handling everything from contracts and front-of-house logistics to artist relations, outreach, and programming. She also became a leader in community theatre, directing and producing numerous plays and building creative teams that brought stories to life. Those experiences strengthened what she already believed: great theatre is built through teamwork, mentorship, and community.

Now in St. Augustine, Cindy curates and produces the season and directs some productions, with a focus on contemporary, socially significant plays that spark conversation. Each show begins with careful selection, then grows through collaboration. A director and producer step in, the creative team forms, and the work expands into a full network of talent: actors shaping character and voice, set designers and builders creating the world of the play, lighting and sound designers crafting mood and momentum, and graphic design that carries the story outward to the community.

What makes this work especially meaningful in St. Augustine is how much of it is powered by volunteers and shared commitment. Without a permanent performance space, the team navigates real challenges such as storage, set building, rehearsal logistics, and meeting needs. Yet the productions move forward because people believe in the mission and show up for one another.

In a city filled with history and inspiration, theater adds a vital voice. Through Cindy Alexander’s leadership and a committed creative team, A Classic Theatre continues to prove that in St. Augustine, the art of theater is not just a performance. It is a shared act of making, together.
